Leadership & Youth Participation
The Challenge
African youth represent over 60% of the continent's population yet remain systematically excluded from decision-making spaces in governance, business, and civil society. Leadership capacity is underdeveloped, mentorship is scarce, and institutional pathways for young leaders are narrow.
GAP's Initiative
The GAP Leadership Development Track builds a continent-wide pipeline of ethical, capable young leaders through structured training, mentorship, and practical community engagement.
Objectives
- Train 10,000 young leaders across Africa by 2030
- Create mentorship pipelines in every GAP Station
- Establish youth leadership councils in target communities

Employment & Economic Inclusion
The Challenge
Youth unemployment in Sub-Saharan Africa hovers above 10% officially — with informal underemployment far higher. Structural barriers, lack of skills matching, and exclusion from formal economic systems lock millions of young Africans out of dignified work and entrepreneurial opportunity.
GAP's Initiative
The GAP SkillAid Economic Inclusion Program equips young people with employable, entrepreneurial, and digital skills, connecting them to economic opportunities in their local and continental contexts.
Objectives
- Equip 5,000+ youth with market-relevant skills annually
- Support 500+ micro-enterprises in target communities
- Create employment linkages with private sector partners

Education & Skills
The Challenge
Quality education remains inaccessible for millions of African youth, particularly in conflict-affected areas, rural zones, and displaced communities. Curricula are often disconnected from real-world needs, and learning outcomes remain low despite enrollment gains.
GAP's Initiative
The GAP Education for Leadership Program complements formal education with practical, values-based learning that prepares youth to solve real problems in their communities.

- Supplement education for 3,000+ youth in underserved areas
- Develop and distribute practical learning curricula

Access to Finance
The Challenge
Young African entrepreneurs and community innovators face near-total exclusion from formal financial systems. Lack of collateral, limited credit history, and structural banking barriers make it nearly impossible for youth to fund their ideas and businesses.
GAP's Initiative
The GAP Financial Inclusion Track connects youth to financial literacy training, seed funding opportunities, and partnerships with financial institutions and impact investors.
Objectives
- Train 2,000+ youth in financial literacy annually
- Facilitate seed funding for 100+ youth ventures per year
- Build relationships with microfinance and impact investors

Focus Area 05
Peace, Security & Stability
The Challenge
Armed conflict, political instability, and community violence continue to displace millions of young Africans and derail development gains. Youth are both primary victims and, when excluded, potential vectors of instability.
GAP's Initiative
The GAP Peacebuilding & Community Cohesion Program trains conflict-sensitive leaders, supports dialogue processes, and delivers humanitarian relief in crisis-affected communities.
Objectives
- Train 1,000 peace advocates and community mediators
- Facilitate 50+ inter-community dialogue sessions annually
- Support displaced communities with dignity-centered relief

Physical & Mental Health
The Challenge
Africa faces a growing youth mental health crisis, compounded by chronic underinvestment in health infrastructure. Trauma from conflict, poverty-related stress, and social stigma keep millions of young people without the support they need to thrive.
GAP's Initiative
The GAP Health & Wellbeing Track integrates mental health awareness, psychosocial support, and health education into community programs and leadership training.
Objectives
- Reach 5,000 youth with mental health awareness programs
- Train 300 community health advocates
- Embed wellbeing practices in all GAP programs

Climate Resilience
The Challenge
African communities bear the heaviest burden of climate change despite contributing least to global emissions. Floods, droughts, and erratic seasons devastate livelihoods and food security, with youth and children disproportionately affected.
GAP's Initiative
The GAP Green Leadership Program trains young climate advocates, supports community adaptation strategies, and mobilizes action on environmental challenges in vulnerable communities.

- Train 2,000 youth as climate action leaders
- Launch 30+ community adaptation projects

The Challenge

The GAP Digital Empowerment Track builds digital literacy, connects youth to technology tools, and equips the next generation to participate confidently in the digital economy.

Gender Equality & Protection
The Challenge
Young African women and girls face compounded barriers — gender-based violence, unequal access to education and economic opportunity, early marriage, and exclusion from leadership. Structural inequalities persist despite policy gains.
GAP's Initiative
The GAP Gender Equity & Protection Program elevates women's leadership, advocates for gender equity in all programs, and provides protection-conscious support for vulnerable youth.

- Ensure 50% women and girl participation in all GAP programs

Accountability & Governance
The Challenge
Weak governance, corruption, and lack of accountability erode community trust, divert resources from public services, and discourage civic participation. Youth are often the first to experience these failures and the last to be included in solutions.
GAP's Initiative
The GAP Governance & Civic Accountability Track equips youth with the knowledge, tools, and platforms to demand and practice good governance at every level.
Objectives
- Train 2,000 civic leaders in governance and accountability
- Establish youth accountability monitoring networks
- Produce 20+ community governance reports annually
